Zero Trust: the security model replacing 'trusted' office networks
The old model assumed everything inside the office network could be trusted. With laptops at home, cloud email and hundreds of connected cameras and sensors, that assumption no longer holds. Zero Trust, described by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology in SP 800-207, treats every user and device as untrusted until verified.
The practical building blocks
- Strong identity: multi-factor authentication for email, VPN and admin access
- Segmentation: cameras, guests, machines and staff on separate VLANs
- Least privilege: users only reach the systems they need
- Continuous monitoring: firewall and endpoint alerts reviewed, not ignored
In 2025 NIST published practical example implementations (SP 1800-35) built with commercial products. You don't need everything at once – start with MFA and segmentation, which close the most common attack paths.
