Wi-Fi 7 is here: what it means for factories and offices
Wi-Fi 7 – formally IEEE 802.11be – was published as a final standard on 22 July 2025, and the Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying Wi-Fi 7 devices in January 2024. It is the biggest step in wireless since Wi-Fi 6.
What's new
- Multi-Link Operation (MLO): a device can use 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands at the same time for higher speed and fewer drops
- 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band (optional) – double Wi-Fi 6's widest channel
- 4096-QAM: about 20% more data per symbol than Wi-Fi 6
- Preamble puncturing: uses the clean parts of a channel even when part of it has interference
Should you upgrade?
For most offices, a well-designed Wi-Fi 6/6E network is still excellent. Wi-Fi 7 makes sense for dense spaces, wireless video, warehouses with many handheld scanners and new buildings that want a 10-year design. The access points also need multi-gigabit switch ports and good cabling behind them – which is why we always design wireless and wired networks together.
