Novec 1230 exit and the HFC phase-down: choosing a gas suppression system in 2026
Gas (clean-agent) suppression protects server rooms, control rooms and archives without water damage. Two global changes now affect which agent you choose.
1. 3M's exit from PFAS and Novec 1230
3M announced it would stop manufacturing PFAS by the end of 2025, which includes Novec 1230 (FK-5-1-12). Existing systems can stay in service, and chemically identical FK-5-1-12 agents are available from other manufacturers, such as Kidde Fluoro-K and Fike SF 1230; Fike's agent, for example, is described as NFPA 2001 and ISO 14520 compliant, UL listed and FM approved.
2. The HFC phase-down
FM-200 (HFC-227ea) is a hydrofluorocarbon. Under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, countries are phasing down HFCs. Pakistan ratified the amendment in October 2025, pledging to cut HFC production and consumption by more than 80% over about 30 years. Prices and availability of HFC agents are expected to change over time.
What we recommend
- Keep existing, well-maintained systems – and check refill availability
- For new projects, compare FK-5-1-12, inert gas and HFC options on cost, room size and refill supply
- Always test room integrity so the agent stays at the right concentration
